Joyful trip hop, doxology-postured·75 BPM·Am·ACIM: only love is real·5:26
"Only love is real, it never dies. Deeper than the pain and the shattered lies."
The whole Course curriculum is pointed at one recognition: that past every story of threat, every projection of fear, every drama the mind invents, only love is real. The song is the album's doxology. It says the line out loud and lets the slide guitar bend up gospel-blues underneath it, because joy is the right response to that recognition.
ACIM connection. "Only love is real" is one of the book's bedrock claims. Everything else, the Course argues, is shadow theater. The song closes the album loop musically too: it returns to the Am of track one, so the journey from "From Fear Back to Love" has come back to where it started, only the listener is different now.
Joyful trip hop, settled and warm, 78 BPM half-time with a smile in the pocket. F major chorus with Fmaj7, Bbadd9, Cadd9 voicings. Slide guitar bending UP gospel-blues rather than weeping. Friction: practice and return one last time. The album has earned the doxology by the time it gets here.
Only love is real Only love can heal ... I've been walking through a movie that my frightened mind produced Every scene is built on conflict, every face a different wound Fear and guilt play all the main roles, running circles in my head Every thought says, "You're in danger," every heartbeat hums with dread But beneath the twisting story, there's a quiet, steady flame Not concerned with loss or winning, not impressed by praise or blame It keeps shining in the background, whether I believe or not A reminder of a truth that all my nightmares had forgot What if all these cries of terror Are just echoes in a cave? What if I could step outside them Into something bright and safe? (clear) Only love is real, the rest will fade Shadows on the wall of a light-filled space When I choose to see with a kinder mind All the monsters turn to shapes of light Only love is real, it never dies Deeper than the pain and the shattered lies When I let the fear pass on through Only love is left, shining clear and true I have tried to fight the darkness, swinging hard at empty air Tried to fix the world before me, without healing what is there But the battle just grows louder every time I join the war Till I stop and feel a presence saying, "You don't need this anymore." I am tired of defending from a threat that isn't real Tired of telling old stories that my heart no longer feels So I lay my weapons gently at the altar in my chest Let the simple truth of love do all the work of bringing rest What if all these cries of terror Are just echoes in a cave? What if I could step outside them Into something bright and safe? Only love is real, the rest will fade Shadows on the wall of a light-filled space When I choose to see with a kinder mind All the monsters turn to shapes of light Only love is real, it never dies Deeper than the pain and the shattered lies When I let the fear pass on through Only love is left, shining clear and true ... I forgive the scenes that felt so cruel... I forgive the roles I played the fool Underneath the script and costume's spell There's a heart that only love can feel Only love is real, the rest will fade Shadows on the wall of a light-filled space When I choose to see with a kinder mind All the monsters turn to shapes of light Only love is real, it never dies Deeper than the pain and the shattered lies When I let the fear pass on through Only love is left, shining clear and true Only love is real Only love can heal (I am safe somehow)
